Keith and Kathy's Mammillarias - Part 2

At the end of March we were given a real treat, a talk by the Society's own Keith & Kathy Flanagan.  Keith and Kathy have both been growing all sorts of cacti and succulents, and of course especially Mammillaria, for a very long time.  They have different areas they specialise in, and either would be more than capable of compiling a fascinating talk on their own. For example, Kathy has been a BCSS Shows Judge for many years, and Keith has a keen interest in location data.  He is also a great photographer, so it comes as no surprise to see the quality of photographs presented to us.  In the past they have travelled to see plants in habitat, and they have a sizeable collection of their own.

How do you condense decades of growing, and a huge number of plants in to a one-hour talk? Well, firstly it is not possible (see below).   Secondly, you choose a way to plan the talk- Keith and Kathy chose an A-Z listing.  This first part took us from Mammillaria albicans to Mammillaria kraehenbuehlii.  What a treat!  Watching Keith and Kathy talk us through slide after slide of beautiful plants is a fabulous way to spend an evening. The knowledge and passion they have is so clear to see, and what is even better is there is a Part 2!  Make a date in your diary for 15th June 2023 20:00 BST for L-Z, starting with Mammillaria lasiacanthas and going right through to Mammillaria zublerae.  The meetings are a great part of what we offer to our members and guests are always welcome, so if you know others who would enjoy it, please do encourage them to come along.
